Description

What is Tdap?

Tetanus, also called lockjaw, is a serious infection caused by Clostridium tetani. This bacteria produces a toxin that affects the brain and nervous system, leading to stiffness in the muscles. The infection can cause severe muscle spasms, serious breathing difficulties, and can ultimately be fatal. The bacteria lives in soil, saliva, dust, and manure. They can enter the body through a deep cut, such as through stepping on a nail, animal bite, or through a burn.

Diphtheria is a serious throat infection that causes a greyish membrane to form in the throat. This leads to difficulty in swallowing, breathing and is potentially fatal. It is transmitted through respiratory droplets or close person-to-person contact. Diphtheria may develop in both children and adults, with those aged 40 to 64 years particularly at risk.

Pertussis or whooping cough is a highly contagious and deadly respiratory illness characterized by prolonged and severe coughing fits associated with vomiting, breathing difficulty, bleeding vessels in the whites of the eye. It is transmitted through respiratory droplets or close person-to-person contact. The disease is most severe among infants, but adults may also develop the disease due to decline in immunity.

Precautions to note:

  • Those with allergic reaction to any vaccine component should not receive the vaccine.
  • Avoid in those who had serious adverse reaction eg. brain inflammation ( encephalitis) after previous vaccinations with the same vaccine.
