What is MMR?
MMR stands for measles, mumps and rubella. These are three different infectious diseases which are caused by three different viruses. The transmission of these diseases is via coughing and sneezing in the air.

Who should have MMR vaccination?

  1. All adults who have not completed vaccination for measles, mumps, or rubella during childhood ( two doses required)
  2. Adults with uncertain vaccination status who are at higher risk of infection (e.g. educational institutions, healthcare
  3. personnel, international travellers to areas with possible suboptimal vaccination coverage.
  4. Unvaccinated women planning to become pregnant ( vaccination must be at least 3 months before conceiving)

How many doses are required?
Two doses given at least 1 month apart.

Patients will be screened prior to the vaccination. Price does not include any related serological tests if they are deemed necessary after screening.

What is MMR?

Measles
Measles is a highly contagious viral infection caused by the measles virus. The illness begins with cough, runny nose and red eyes, followed by the appearance of a florid rash in a few days. Complication include inflammation of the brain (encephalitis) fits, ear infections, bronchitis and pneumonia.

Mumps
Mumps is a highly contagious viral infection caused by the mumps virus. Initial signs and symptoms include fever, muscle pain, headache, poor appetite, and feeling tired This is then usually followed by painful swelling of one or both parotid salivary glands. Serious complications can arise from mumps such as brain infection, testicular inflammation, deafness and pancreas inflammation.

Rubella
Rubella, also known as German measles, is a highly contagious viral infection caused by the Rubella virus. It presents with low-grade fever, rash, red eyes, runny nose and lymph node swelling, It can be associated with haemorrhagic complications, Guillain-Barré syndrome and brain infection in rare occasions. Importantly, rubella during the first 8 to 10 weeks of pregnancy may lead birth defects, miscarriage or stillbirth.

Precautions to note:

  • Those with allergic reaction to any vaccine component, a previous dose, or neomycin should not have it.
  • Pregnant women should not receive the vaccine.
  • Pregnancy should be avoided until 3 months after vaccination.
  • It is not recommended for those who are immunocompromised.
  • Those with suspected egg allergy should consult the doctor before having it.
