Sinopharm COVID-19 vaccine, is an aluminum-hydroxide-adjuvanted inactivated whole virus SARS-CoV-2 vaccine developed by the China National Biotec Group (CNBG), Sinopharm.

It is the sixth vaccine to be authorised by the WHO for its emergency use listing, and received WHO validation for its safety, efficacy and quality.

How is it administered?

Who is the vaccine suitable for?

  • Adults aged 60 years and above
  • Persons with co-morbidities. These include conditions such diabetes, hypertension, hyperlipidemia , heart disease, chronic kidney disease, etc
  • Pregnant women
  • Lactating women
  • Immunocompromised persons and those with HIV
  • Persons who have previously had SARS-CoV-2 infection

Who is the vaccine unsuitable for?

  • Children and adolescents below the age of 18 years
  • Persons with acute PCR-confirmed COVID-19 should not be vaccinated until after they have recovered
  • Persons who previously received monoclonal antibodies or convalescent plasma as part of COVID-19 treatment should defer the vaccination for at least 90days
  • A history of anaphylaxis to any component of the vaccine is a contraindication to vaccination
  • Anyone with an acute febrile illness

Possible side effects
Some common adverse reactions to the vaccine include: pain, redness, swelling at injection site, headache, fatigue, muscle aches, nausea, dizziness. These side effects are similar to those of other authorised vaccines against COVID-19, and most were mild to moderate


Instructions before appointment

  • Get access to information on the vaccine and its side effects
  • Ensure you have adequate rest and are healthy before the administration of each dose
  • On the day of vaccination, if you feel unwell, postpone the vaccination and visit a doctor
  • Avoid alcohol consumption before and after your vaccination, as it can cause you to be dehydrated
  • Standby paracetamol for any side effects when necessary
